Hornby Island

Farmland Trust

Our Mission

Hornby Island Farmland Trust Society is a community-led organization dedicated to protecting farmland, cultivating food resilience, and nurturing connections through sustainable agriculture. We work to empower our community to grow, preserve, and share the abundance of this unique and beautiful land.

The Donny Farris
Community Garden

The Donny Farris Community Garden is 1.5 acre garden, fed by 2 ponds and a gravity irrigation system on Sollans Road. This vibrant space consists of 44 allotments - 4 of which have been dedicated to the Community Kitchen who grow food for Joe’s Cafe and the Food Bank.

These gardens support community members who lack access to productive land, encouraging self-sufficiency and the opportunities to cultivate fresh organic foods. With demand continually increasing, we are actively exploring opportunities to expand the gardens.

Share the Harvest:
Gleaning Program

Our ā€˜Share the Harvest’ Gleaning Program is led by Katy Dewinetz and her team of dedicated volunteers, who collect fruit and nuts from trees across Hornby Island that would otherwise go to waste.

This initiative supports food security, fosters community connections, and redistributes produce between land owners, volunteers and the wider community. Since its launch in 2020, the program has been growing rapidly - processing thousands of pounds of produce each year.

A Community Food Collective: the Shed.

ā€œthe Shedā€ is a dynamic community collective designed to enhance food security, economic resilience, and agricultural education on Hornby Island.

Once complete, this facility will offer climate-controlled root cellars, commercial-grade food processing and storage spaces, an Island Health-certified kitchen, and a bustling community marketplace.

By providing shared resources and education, the Shed empowers farmers and culinary entreprenures to create new opportunities on Hornby Island and beyond.
